Biography

Robert Higgins was born in 1690 in Dublin, Ireland. His parents are Jedediah Higgins (aft.1667-bef.1715) and Mary Sibel (Newbold) Higgins (1661-1715)>

"Robert Higgins was born in the city of Dublin, Ireland. He followed the high seas from 14 years of age until he was 40, about which time he married HANNAH VANZANDT, daughter of Capt. VANZANDT, in New Amsterdam (now New York) -- then settled in Pennsylvania about 40 miles from Philadelphia where the greater part of his family were born.From thence he moved to the south branch of the Potomac River into what is now Hardy County, West Virginia, near Morefield, where the younger members of the family were born and raised, part of them in Fort Pleasant (on the present farm of ISAAC VANMETER)."[1]

"Robert was a ship captain that came to the Dutch Colony of New Netherlands (now New York) in about 1739. It is recorded that at the age of 10 years he went on a vessel as a cabin boy. Later he married the daughter of the ship's owner.

Robert Higgins married Hannah VanZandt (1711–1808) in 1748, in New Amsterdam, New York.

Henry Higgins, b. April 02, 1749, Westmoreland Co, Pennsylvania or Walpack, Sussex County, New Jersey, d. 1814, Redbanks, Henderson County, Kentucky.
William Higgins, b. 1750, Smithfield, Monroe Co., Pa or Westmoreland Co., PA, d. 1826, Mercer County, Kentucky.
Eleanor Higgins, b. November 12, 1752, Smithfield, Monroe Co., Pa or Westmoreland Co., PA, d. 1843, Mercer County, Kentucky.

Robert and his family moved from New York, to New Jersey, to Pennsylvania, then to Hampshire County, Virginia and finally to Mercer County, Kentucky.

Robert Higgins passed away in 1800, in Mercer County, Kentucky.
