Biography

John Higgins was born on the 20th of August 1818, in Peebles, Peebles-shire, Scotland. He was the son of John and Agnes (Fraser) Higgins. ^[1]

John was christened at Peebles, Peebles-shire, Scotland. ^[2]

In 1840 John Higgins marries Janet Laurie in Peebles, Scotland. ^[3]

John dies on the 1st January 1889, in Berrico, New South Wales, Australia. ^{[4] [5]} He is buried at Barrington Pioneer Cemetery, Barrington, New South Wales, Australia. ^[6]

OBITUARY - Mr. JOHN HIGGINS.

This gentleman, who died on January 1, at his residence, Berrico, was one of the oldest residents of the Port Stephens district. He came to the colony as far back as 1839. He passed the first three years of his colonial life in the Goulburn district, and afterward went to Port Stephens, and was engaged by the A. A. Company as one of its overseers, and held a responsible position in the management of its sheep. His experience of life was very varied. Mr. Higgins left the A. A. Company's service, after a long and useful connection ; and moved, together with his father-in-law (the late Mr. Joseph Laurie, of Rawden Vale) and other members of his wife's family, to the neighborhood of Gloucester and formed the homestead of Berrico, where he lived for upward of thirty years. Mr. Higgins never took a very active part in public movements ; but in pastoral matters he did good work. He was a member and treasurer of the Pastures and Stock Protection Board of his district, from the time of its inauguration to his decease at the age of seventy years.^[7]
