Austin Higgins was born on 2 November 1787 at West Malling in Kent, England. His parents were John Higgins and Sarah Bridgland. He was baptised on 9 December 1787.[1]
Austin was married to Mary Nash (1789-1863) on 12 August 1810 in Rochester, Kent, England.[2] They had thirteen children before migrating with the family to South Australia on the Eliza in 1840.
Austin initially found work on a farm at Port Gawler. In 1849, he moved with most of the family to Reedy Creek near Tungkillo to provide transport and other services to a new copper mine there.
A few years later, in 1853, they moved again, this time to the Victorian goldfields, and settled at Clydesdale.
Austin died in Clydesdale Victoria on 1 December 1861 aged 74.[3]
