Birth

James Bernice High, who was known as "JB" High as an adult, was born to James Bernice High and Mary Jean Bissette on June 8th, 1925 in Martinsville, Henry County, Virginia, USA[1]. His parents were living temporarily in Virginia related to his Father's job as a steamfitter.

Siblings

JB was the firstborn child, and had one full sibling, Joseph Hommer High, who was born on November 22, 1926 in Nash County, North Carolina, United States.[2]

JB and his brother Joseph, later had one younger half-sister named Elsie Joyce Langley born 25 November 1930.[3]

JB's Father Injured & Hospitalized

JB's Father, known as Bernice High, was struck by a vehicle, and while recovering from injuring his ribs, he either contracted Tuberculosis, or was diagnosed as having Tuberculosis. Bernice High was being treated in the Nash County Home Sanitarium, and is listed as an "Inmate" in the 1930 census.[4] The census shows him as widowed, but this is incorrect. Bernice High passed away while still being treated for TB, on February 25, 1932.

JB & his brother Joseph abandoned by their mother, left with the O'Neal family

JB and his brother Joseph were abandoned by their mother Mary, and she apparently committed bigamy by marrying a person named David Langley in Johnson County, North Carolina. She is listed in the 1930 census as being Mary Langley and married[5]. No record for a divorce has been found and Bernice High was still alive in the hospital, so this second marriage was likely done in a way to conceal that she was already married. She gave birth to a daughter, JB and Joseph's half-sister named, Elsie Joyce Langley, on November 25th, 1930.

In the same census year 1930 their Mother, Mary, is living with David Langley, and using the name of Mary Langley, JB and his brother Joseph Homer, age 4 and 3, respectively, are listed as "Boarders" residing with Mack Cagie O'Neal and his wife Mattie O'Neal.[6]

NOTE: The mother of JB and his brother, had also been raised by Mack Cagie O'Neal and his wife Mattie O'Neal and although they are listed as "boarders" in the 1930 census record, subsequent documents show the status of the relationship as "guardian".[7]

In 1932 the great depression was still in full swing, and the unemployment rate was over 24%. See: http://www.thepeoplehistory.com/1932.html for the events which were occurring in 1932.

By May 17th 1950, and perhaps as early as 1935, she had moved to New York and was using the name "Mary Bigby".[8]

The census was conducted starting in April 1, 1930, so JB and his brother Joseph Hommer were recorded as Boarders with the O'Neal family in the 1930 census.[9]

NOTE: The 1940 census incorrectly identifies JB as having been born in North Carolina, and indicates that he and his brother were present in the same house on April 1, 1935, however it is likely they were there since sometime in 1930.

JB & his brother Joseph raised in Middlesex Children's Home

The two boys were placed into the Middlesex Children's Home likely sometime after April in 1930, by Mack Cagie O'Neal. His wife Mattie Winborne, died of a burst appendix, on 11 Aug 1930, and it is likely that the two boys were placed into orphanage after her death occurred.

In the 1940 Census, we see JB High as a 14 year old "inmate" at the Middlesex Children's Home / Orphanage.[10]

The O'Neal family were the informal adopted parents of Mary Jean Bissette, the mother of JB and Joseph. Mattie Winborne, passed away on August the 7th, 1930 from a infected appendix which burst and caused a runaway infection.

JB and Joseph recalled being taken by Mack Cagie O'Neal from the orphanage when their Father died so that they could go to the burial site, but were not allowed to get close enough to see much. [11] [12]. Mack Cagie O'Neal continued to financially sponsor the two boys and had them come to his home periodically. He had intended to keep the two boys with him, but the local community pressured him to have them placed in the Middlesex Children's Home, which he did with the requirement that they not be adopted out of the home.

JB's paternal grandfather. James Madison High, passed away on 4 Oct 1942. It's unclear if JB knew about James Madison's death, or if JB or his brother Joseph, were supposed to receive any inheritance from his estate. Further research into the estate of James Madison may reveal more information about what happened.

JB leaves the orphanage and joins the Navy

JB is listed on the World War II Navy Muster Roll on December 31st, 1942, and he joined the Navy when he was 17 years old. He is shown on Navy Muster Rolls until April 20th, 1945, and was in the Pacific Theater and served aboard the USS LST-334, and USS Donner (LSD-20).
