“… Carlton H. Barnard, a prominent business man of Butler, Pennsylvania, was born in Windsor, Ashtabula County, Ohio, December 18, 1862, the son of Francis and Jane (Higley) Barnard.
Francis Barnard, deceased, was born in Windsor, Ohio, September 29, 1834, the son of Francis and Elizabeth (Keneippe) Barnard. Francis Barnard was born in 1785 in Vermont, and died September 9, 1873. His wife, Elizabeth Keneippe, was born June 13, 1800, and died August 11, 1862. The remains of both are buried in Windsor, Ohio. He was an early pioneer of Ashtabula County and followed agriculture. Their son, Francis Barnard, was reared on his father's farm. He enlisted during the Civil War on August 9, 1862, in Company K, One Hundred and Fifth Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was wounded and after leaving the hospital was discharged on May 27, 1863. Upon his return to civil life he followed farming until 1874, when he retired. He was a Republican and a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. He died May 15, 1912, and is buried at the Soldiers' Home, Sandusky, Ohio.
Jane (Higley) Barnard was born in Windsor, Ohio, July 15, 1839, and died March 9, 1873, and is buried in Windsor, Ohio. She was the daughter of Hon. Jonathan 3rd and Martha (Kinney-Lewis) Higley. He was born in East Ganberry, Connecticut, March 17, 1781, and removed to Windsor, Ohio, October 20, 1804, where he followed agriculture. His marriage in 1806 was the first marriage ceremony to be performed in Windsor Township. He died August 13, 1866, and is buried in Windsor, Ohio. He was the son of Esquire Jonathan, Sr., and Rachel (Negus) Higley. She died August 14, 1816, and her husband died in May, 1817. Both are buried in Windsor, Ohio. He was elected to the Ohio Legislature in 1829. The Higley family were of English descent. John Higley was the first of the family to come to America. He ran away from home, boarded a trading vessel and came to the United States in 1604, and settled in Connecticut. His father apprenticed him to a trade, but not liking that vocation he ran away. The Higleys have served with distinction in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican War, Civil War, Spanish-American War, and the World War. To Francis and Jane (Higley) Barnard six children were born: Elva, born March 27, 1859, married J. D. Jones. He died in March, 1926, and she resides in Oakland, Cal.; Elverton A., born March 4, 1861, lives retired at Dayton, Ohio; Carlton H., the subject of this sketch; Margaret E., born April 28, 1865, married William Adams. He is deceased and is buried at Windsor, Ohio. She lives at Painesville, Ohio; Fayette B., born August 7, 1867, died March 6, 1924, buried at Canton, Ohio; and Emma L., born July 15, 1869, died June 28, 1926, buried at Chardon, Ohio. She married John Pierce, who now lives retired at Chardon. …”
