Biography

Sarah Cornelia Higley Kendall and her husband Albert came to Iowa with the Abiel and Prudence (Crane) Higley family back in the 1840's and settled in Marion. The Higley family settled in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Albert Kendall established Kendall Hardware, which his son Wellington Jerome (at one time attended seminary school) took over when he became an adult. Sarah and Albert's other son, William, moved to the Burlington area and worked with the railroad there. I have a little family history there, but nothing current. Wellington's son (my grandfather) Karl Wellington had to buy Kendall Hardware back into the family, as his mother, Emma R. (Braucht) Kendall (who had a church circle named after her at the 1st Congregational Church in Marion) had to sell it after Wellington passed away. They had three children (two infants died)... in addition to my Grandpa Karl, Alberta married Ed Sigfred, who owned the clothing store in Marion, and Ralph Jerome. Alberta did not have any children. Ralph married and I believe had children, but finding it difficult to find any other information-think he is buried in Cedar Memorial. Sarah and Albert Kendall are buried in the old part of the Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion, Iowa. (Linn County) Susan E. Kelley Benjamin
