Richard Hildreth is notable:[1]

  • American journalist, author, historian, abolitionist
  • Graduated from Harvard College and admitted to the bar at Boston in 1830
  • 1832, became joint founder and editor of a daily newspaper, the Boston Atlas
  • 1834, wrote a popular anti-slavery novel The Slave: or Memoir of Archy Moore
  • Authored History of the United States of America covering 1497–1821 and published 1840-1853
  • Between 1857 and 1860, worked for the New York Tribune and during the same period he wrote several anti-slavery tracts for the fledgling Republican party
  • Appointed as the United States consul at Trieste from 1861 - 1865 during the Lincoln administration
  • Resigned consul appointment due to health issues, moved to Florence, Italy and died there on 11 June 1865

Richard Hildreth was born in Massachusetts.

Richard the first son and eldest of seven children of Hosea Hildreth and Sarah McLeod was born on 28 June 1807 at Deerfield, Massachusetts.[2]

Marriage and Children

Richard married Caroline Gould Negus on 7 June 1845 at Deerfield, Franklin, Massachusetts.[3] They had two children born at Boston:

  1. Arthur Shelly McLeod Hildreth (b. 1848; d. 25 Nov 1904, Boston, MA)[4][5]
  2. Ernest Angelo Hildreth (b. 1851)

In 1850, Richard (43 years), wife Caroline (38 years), their son Arthur M. (2 years), Richard's widowed mother Sarah (69 years, incorrectly identified as "Susan") and two servants, Cutte Dolan (19 years, b. Ireland) and Mary Murphy (25 years, b. Ireland) were living at Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts.[6]

Death and Burial

Richard Hildreth died on 11 July 1865 in his 58th year at Florence, Italy. He is buried in the Cimitero Acattolico at Florence, Città Metropolitana di Firenze, Toscana, Italy.[7] and [8]

  • A lengthy notice of Richard's death was included in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register in 1866.[9]
  • Richard has two Find-A-Grave profiles. Both managers were contacted on 1 March 2022 to let them know that their work needs to be combined into one memorial for this person.
