Alice Hill was born in Lincolnshire, England. She emigrated to New Zealand in 1852 with her parents and seven siblings. They sailed on the ship Cashmere from Gravesend on 22 October 1852. The family settled in the Auckland and South Auckland areas.
In 1875 Alice married Alfred Arnaud Morris McKellar. They lived in Timaru, after moving there for the health of her husband, and Christchurch. They had three children.
Alice McKellar died in 1933, aged 89.
