Research Notes

There appears to be two Robert Hills that are conflated here. The one that married Ann Kinge appears to have died in England, so not sure who the one that died in Virginia is. Foster-86

Profile Hill-28179 had been attached to an English family, but probably belongs to the Virginia family. He had a birth date of "11 Aug 1584" (removed as unlikely with 1678 death).

That date could be death of father. Also there appears to be a christening 11/8/1584, but is that November 8 or August 11 and most likely is really for Robert Hull shown born before 8 Nov 1584. Foster-86

Death location of other profile merged in was Isle of Wight County, Colony of Virginia which is very close to Surry Count and the family owned land in both areas. 31 Jul 2018 Liz (Noland) Shifflett

There is a Robert Hill that immigrated to Boston around 1637 and went to New Haven.[1]

In the record "London and Surrey, England, Marriage Bonds and Allegations, 1597-1921" it states "Robert Hill, age 56, born 1585, was married to Ann King age 42. The document is in Latin which I cannot read but the tag states that on December 29, 1641, in the parish of St. Nicholas Acons in London the two were engaged in some kind of "Allegation". Ann was said to be from the parish of Chipping Onger in Essex County. What strikes me here is the reference to St. Nicholas Acons. I descend from the Hill family that is an allied family of my main line Tucker. My Tucker's lived in the St. Nicholas Acons Parish and worshipped at St. Nicholas Acons Church. These families migrated to the Virginia Colony and continued to live around one another, marry and continued to migrate together. I hope this helps in solving the controversary surrounding this couple.

RECORDS FOR ROBERT HILL AND ANNE KINGE OF WIVETON

I recently began a search for records of Robert Hill and Anne Kinge in and around Wiveton, Norfolk County, England. My results are described in FamilySearch profile Robert Hill (d. 1642) LY18-PSL.

Anne Kinge, daughter of John Kinge, was baptized in Wiveton in 1601. One or more John Kinge's had 16 children baptized in Wiveton between 1571 and 1605. Her mother may have been Elizabeth (last name at birth unknown). John Kinges' daughter, Susanna, was baptized in 1599. Her record names her mother Elizabeth. The mother's name is not stated in the baptism record for any other child of John Kinge baptized at Wiveton bewteen 1571 and 1605.

An Anne King married Robert Hill in Cockthorpe, 4 1/2 miles west of Wiveton, in 1619. The record is in Latin so the first names are Robertus and Annam.

Robert Hill and Anne baptized three children at Wiveton: Elizabeth (1629), Robert (1631), John (1639).

BURIAL IN WIVETON

Robert Hill, son of Robert and Anne, was buried 21 May 1640. Robert Hill gentleman was buried 25 July 1642. John Hill, son of Robert and Anne, was buried 9 Feb 1642/3.

A FamilySearch user located a burial for Robert Hill of Wiveton registered in Norfolk (Norwich Archdeaconry). The user (JaretHill) states

The Will Register record is found at https://nrocatalogue.norfolk.gov.uk/index.php/archdeaconry-of-norwich .

ANW, will register, 1640-1643, fo. 380, no. 345. Existence and location of copies: Use microfilm MF/RO 327.

Description identifier: f1c7427d-4afb-42e2-8b15-cf8a8ec10f44

I have located nothing further for Anne (Kinge) Hill (bp 1601) or her daughter, Elizabeth Hill (bp 1629). Presumably they died in Norfolk. There is no evidence to suggest Anne Kinge died in Somerset.

The only two known sons of Robert Hill and Anne Kinge, Robert (jr) and John, died as children. There is no evidence to suggest this couple is in any way related to Robert Hill who died before 1680 in Surry County, Virginia.

Because the current Wikitree profile for Robert Hill of Wiveton seems to be rooted in Robert Hill and Anne Kinge, I suggest correcting the profile with the Wiveton and Cockthorpe parish record information.

The profile managers will need to agree to the changes as it disconnects Robert Hill and Anne Kinge of Wiveton from Robert Hill of Surry, Virginia. The real Robert Hill of Wiveton died there in 1642.

THE MYTHOLOGY OF ROBERT HILL AND ANNE KINGE OF WIVETON, ENGLAND

A series of details regarding Robert Hill of Wiveton, most of which have nothing to do with him, have apparently been nurtured for decades by family historians interested in Robert Hill of Virginia , who emigrated in the 1600s from England.

This family story found a Robert Hill born in about 1615 in England. He was then assumed to be the immigrant ancestor to Virginia (without any documented evidence).

Next Robert Hill ca 1615 became the son of Robert Hill of Wiveton, Norfolk. Someone guessed at dates for Robert Hill the father (born ca 1589) and his wife, Anne Kinge (born 1593).

Several Robert Hills were baptized in England around 1615. More than one of them have been linked to Robert and Anne.

Next, Robert Hill of Wiveton was conflated with Robert Hull, son of Thomas Hull the younger and Joan Peson/Pysinge of Crewkerne. Robert HULL was baptized 8 Nov 1584 in Crewkerne. He was buried at the age of 12 on 5 April 1597 in Crewkerne. Since there was no documentation for Robert Hill of Wiveton, someone conflated him with Robert Hull. Robert of Wiveton, whom some thought was born about 1589, then took on Robert Hull's birthdate. But then the day and month were flipped--probably a confusion between 11/8/1584 and 8/11/1584 with US and UK readers interpreting these in two different ways (Month/Day/Year in US vs Day/Month/Year in UK).

Because Robert HULL had an actual burial record, Robert Hill of Wiveton was then "buried" in Crewkerne, Somerset some 270 miles from Wiveton. But a death in 1597 did not allow him to marry Anne Kinge or have children who emigrated to America. Robert HULL's 5 Apr 1597 burial date became some other year in the 1600s. Hence, the biography for this profile puts Robert HILL's burial on 5 April 1659 in Crewkerne, exactly 60 years after the death of Robert HULL. Mind you, there is no burial record for Robert Hill in Crewkerne.

A few different FamilySearch profiles for Robert Hill of Wiveton have been merged so that we got Robert Francis Hill corresponding to the FindAGrave profile putting the composite Robert Hill's burial in Crewkerne.

CONFLATION

As noted in the Orange warning tag above, this profile does conflate multiple people.

1. Robert Hill of Wiveton, Norfolk, England who married Anne Kinge.

2. Robert Hull (1584-1597), son of Thomas Hull the younger and Joan Person/Pysinge, whose details have been claimed for Robert Hill of Wiveton.

3. The above composite person was been linked to one or more Robert Hills who lived in Virginia in the 1600s and apparently immigrated from England.

In addition, FamilySearch profiles for two unrelated persons named Robert Hill are listed in Sources. These persons, assuming they actually exist, have nothing to do with the primary conflation, which is Robert Hill of Wiveton, Norfolk, England, wife Anne Kinge with "Robert Hill" who died in Crewkerne. (Actually the 12-year-old Robert Hull whose details were co-opted by family researchers for Robert Hill of Wiveton.)

"Robert Hill (KNSS-QCV)" This profile claims a marriage of Robert Hill (b ca 1603) to Anne Hudson (b ca 1607) m. 29 Jul 1628. No sources are cited for the couples birth years or for the marriage. The profile's sources are the baptisms of 9 children from FamilySearch "England Births and Baptisms, 1538-1975." All the children were baptized in Manchester, England over a 25-year period (1629-1654). Robert Hill was the father in each case. No mother was given.

"Robert Hill (KHLW-JK5)" This second profile is for a Robert Hill (born ca 1597) and wife Ann (ca 1601-1629) with two children. All are said to have been born in Blakely, Lancs. I am not sure where that is. There is a Blakeley in the Manchester area. NO SOURCES ARE CITED for any of this profile.
