NOTE: The change in spelling between the father Vasey C. Hill (1814-1887) and the son Vesey H. Hill (1841-1920) is deliberate. The son Vesey changed the spelling of his name after he was married.

Biography

Captain Vasey H. Hill was born in 1841, near Owen Sound Canada. He is the son of Vesey Hill and Sarah Anna Adlum.

1861 Census lists Vasey H Hill, 20y; Anna (Sarah), 16y; and Thomas, 9y--all 3 living in the household of Richard A. Hill, who was a stationer who owned a store in Owen Sound. Richard A. Hill never married but perhaps he was helping to care for and/or school his brother's children. (Vasey C. Hill, his brother, was working as lighthouse keeper on Griffith Island, which is some distance away).

28 Jun 1866: He married Ann Chambers at St George Anglican Church in Owen Sound., Witnesses were James Corbit and brother Richard A. Hill. After he was married, Vasey changed the spelling of his name to Vesey.

Vesey H. Hill and Ann Chambers had one child:

1. (Richard Chambers Hill, born 15 Mar 1867. Ann Chambers died days after giving birth.

23 Jan 1872: Vesey H. Hill (age 28) then married Alice Manning (1826) Julyan, daughter of Charles and Ellen Julyan, in Sarawak, Grey, Ontario, Canada.^[1] They had the following children:

1. Ida Emma (1872- ) m Robert John Seton Adamson; 3 children
2. Helena Anne (1874-1966) died 17 Mar 1966 in Los Angeles
3. Amie Alice (1877-1877)
4. Walter Julyan (1880- ) m Deborah Larter (1877- )
5. Arthur Vesey (1885-1976)
6. Henry Manning (1887- ) m Pearl Ivy Woods (1893-1918); 1 daughter.

2 Aug 1920. Captain V. Hill is buried in the St. George Anglican Church cemetery, Owen Sound. His second wife died in 1939 and she is also buried there, as is Vesey's first wife Ann.^[2]

Research Notes

His second wife Alice is mentioned on the death record of Vesey H. Hill as Alice Manning, but other records indicate that her last name at birth was Julyan. Interestingly, Manning was the family name of Alice's mother.
