Richard A. Hill was born about 1812, in County Cork, Ireland. He was the third son of Boyle Travers Hill and Elizabeth Rogers.
Around 1830, he migrated to Canada, as did his younger brother Vasey Colclough Hill. The Hill brothers had 8 other siblings, most of whom remained in Ireland.
Richard A. Hill was a stationer in Owen Sound, and he owned a store there. He never married, but other Hill family members (the children of his brother, Captain Vasey Colclough Hill, the lighthouse keeper) lived with him. Perhaps he was helping to care for and/or school his brother's children. (Vasey C. Hill, his brother, was working as lighthouse keeper on Griffith Island, which is some distance away).
1861 Census lists Vasey H Hill, 20y; Anna (Sarah), 16y; and Thomas, 9y--all 3 living in the household of Richard A. Hill,
1871 Census shows household of his Vasey C. Hill's brother Richard A. Hill, 59y consisting of Richard Hill, 30y (his nephew) Cathrin, 20y, (Richard's wife), and their two young children, Thomas, 2y; and Henry C., 4 months.
He died in 23 Aug 1871, and he is buried in the St. George Anglican Church cemetery in Owen Sound.
