Biography

The Daily Chronicle & Sentinel recorded he was 76 years old in 1846 when he died which confirms he was born in 1770.[1] According to some descendants, Guilliam Hill was born in Ireland, and came to America as a child. This claim has not been substantiated with any documents.

His father has not been documented at this point. Based on the marriage of two sons to Fielding Fryer's daughters, and Fielding Fryer owning land on Bryer [Brier] Creek, Edmond Hill who was granted land at the same time on Brier Creek is perhaps his father. Two surveys recorded land laid out unto Edmund Hill in 1784 in Burke County - a tract of land containing 300 acres on the North side of Briar Creek, [2] and one on the Burke road between Rocky Creek and John Sharps land,[3]

Guilliam was documented owning land in Burke County, Georgia. In 1798, Gillam Hill was taxed on 200 acres of land with one dwelling, and for 400 acres of land owned by Henry Hughes with one dwelling.[4] Also Emily Hill was taxed for 150 acres, and William Hill was taxed for 150 acres. The tax list did not record Guilliam owned any slaves on the 1st day of October 1798.

The Augusta Chronicle, on the 19th of September, 1807 reported that "Gillam Hill" of Burke County was one of the fortunate drawers in the Georgia Land Lottery.[5] The 1807 Georgia Land Lottery was for ceded Creek Indian lands in the newly formed counties of Baldwin: 15 Districts (6-20), and Wilkinson: 23 Districts (6-28).

The household of "Gilham Hill" was enumerated in Burke County, Georgia on the 1820 Census with:

two males under 10, one male 10-15, one male 16-26, one male over 45,
one female under 10, one female 10-15, one female 16-26, one female 25 to 45, one female over 45[6]

The 1830 Census enumerated the household of "Gilliam Hill" with:

one male age 10 to 15, two males age 15 to 20, one male age 50 to 60,
two females age 10 to 15, two females age 20 to 30[7]

On the 21st day of July 1834, Alton Pemberton sold to "Gillam Hill" of the county of Burke a certain tract or parcel of land containing 88 acres. The plat attached to the deed shows the land bounded on Gillam Hill's land and lands of Alton Pemberton.[8] Of special interest on the conveyance, was one of the witnesses to the sale was John M. W. Hill.

Guilliam Hill of Burke County Georgia set his hand and seal to his Last Will and Testament on the 26th day of May 1846 making these bequests:

Hill two Negroe Slaves namely Moses & Charlotte and to Fredrick Hill's children four negro slaves to wit Agram Philis Becky & Alexand and 250 acres of land to Gilliam Hill Jr. being the tract of land known by the name of the "Thomas Gray tract" of land and to Frederick Hill $100 and to my daughter Rody Lockhart all that tract of land which I now live on and all my stock of horses mules cattle and hogs together with the plantation tools and household & kitchen furniture and six negro slaves to wit Reuben, Charly Kit Harriet and Bob and Amy my daughter Rody Lockhart during her natural life or widowhood after either of these events to be divided between my six sons my daughter Demarias Smith one Negro Slave Francis during her natural life time after either of these events to be divided between my six sons son Benj. Mr. H., for the last 20 years of his life, was sorely afflicted with a cancer on the right side of his face, which brought him, amid great suffering, to his grave. He has left a large family of children and numerous friends to mourn his loss.[1]

Guilliam was buried at Whiteponds, near Botsford Baptist Church, Burke County.[citation needed]

On the 4th day of January 1848, Benjamin D. Hill as Administrator of the Estate of Guillam Hill, late of Burke County, sold at public sale and outcry to Davis B. Hadley all that tract or parcel of land in the county of Burke, being a part of the real estate of said Guilliam Hill deceased containing 927 acres adjoining the lands of John Berrien Whitehead, John Whitehead Senior, John G. Hatcher, and Zachariah Lewis F Wimberly.[8] A copy of the 1834 deed and plat was attached to the Indenture, and recorded.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Guilliam by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Guilliam:
