Biography

Charles was born in 1847 in Shelby County, Indiana, the son of Samuel Fitz Randolph Hill and Julia Higgins. His mother died the following year. When he was six years old in about 1854, he moved to live with his half-brother Andrew in Davis County, Iowa. When he was 20 years old in 1868, he married Celia Loucetta Kirkpatrick in Kirkville in Wapello County, Iowa. They initially started farming in the Bloomfield area back in Davis County, Iowa, but then went to Arkansas for a few years in the early 1870s. By 1880, the growing family was living back in Iowa in Keota in Keokuk County where Charles was disabled and not working. Charles and Celia had eight children, three of whom died young. By 1885, he was farming again in Henry County, Iowa. At some point before 1900, the family moved to farm in Calcasieu, Louisiana. By 1910, Charles and Celia were living with their daughter's family in Jennings in Calcasieu County. Charles died in Jennings in 1928 at the age of 80.
