Bentley was born at Cheapsides in the parish of Blacktoft, Yorkshire, England, and baptised at the parish church in 1837. He was the son of Thomas and Alice.^[1] In 1841 he lived with his parents in Howden, Yorkshire.^[2]

At the time of the 1851 census, Bentley was a tailor apprenticed to James Young in Eastrington, Yorkshire;^[3] in 1861 he was listed as a tailor and "servant" to Mr Young.^[4]

Bentley married James's daughter, Elizabeth, in 1865^[5][6] and the couple lived in Eastrington in 1871, when Bentley had two apprentices.^{[7][8][9][10]}

Elizabeth died in 1905 at the age of 70^[11] and in 1911 Bentley lived alone in Eastrington.^[12]

He died in 1927 at the age of 89.^[13]
