Biography

This is the profile for Philip Hill of Bedminister, Somerset, England who had children Margery and Zabulon baptized there in 1616 and 1620, respectively.

Bedminster Parish Records

Information about Phillip and his children is limited due to the fact that most of the Bedminster parish register records prior to the mid-1600s are missing. The parish register for years prior to 1650 appears to no longer be extant, and the bishop's transcripts of those the parish register records for that time perod are fragmentary. The bishop's transcripts prior to 1650 consist only of records for baptisms, marriages and burials in 1598-1599, some undated baptisms, marriages and burials from sometime in 1599-1616, burials in May 1623-April 1624, and baptisms, marriages and burials in 1629-1630.[1]

Set forth below are the only records that have been found for Philip in the bishop's transcripts of the Bedminister parish register:

  • sometime in 1599-1616: Burials: Dec 1: Joane daughter to Philip Hill.[2][3][4] (Ancestry of Samuel Blanchard Ordway suggests that Joane's burial may have occurred in 1610, but the basis for that assertion in unclear.[4])
  • 1611: Burials: May 1, 1611: Jone daughter of Philip(?) Hill[5][4]
  • 1616: Christenings: Oct 18: Margery the daughter of Phillip Hill[6][7][4]
  • 1619: Christenings: Mar 21: Zabulon Hill the sonne of Phillip Hill[8][9][4]

Parentage; Date and Place of Birth

Philip's parentage is unknown and his date and place of birth uncertain. Based on the fact that he had children baptized in 1616 and, as discussed below under children, probably also as late as 1635, Philip was probably born sometime in 1585-1595, with about 1590 being a reasonable midpoint estimate. Since the only known records relating to Philip are from Bedminster, England, it is reasonably likely that Philip was born in or near Bedminster.

Probable Father of Philip, Zebulon, Elinor and John Hill

The author of the 1990 Ancestry of Samuel Blanchard Ordway stated that Philip Hill of Bedminister, Zebulon Hill of Gloucester and Salem, Massachusetts, Elinor (Hill) Babson of Gloucester, Massachusetts and John Hill of Salem and Beverly, Massachusetts "could" have been the children of this profile's Philip Hill or one of the other Hills who appear in the remaining Bedminster parish records.[10] However, as set forth below, the evidence in favor of this profile's Philip Hill being the parent is actually fairly strong and certainly strong enough to make his parentage probable.

  • As discussed in their profiles, evidence establishes the Philip, Zebulon, Elinor and John were siblings.
  • The name of the younger Philip Hill matches the name of this profile's Philip Hill.
  • The younger Philip Hill lived in Bedminster, Somerset[11] as did this profile's Philip Hill, while his brothers Zebulon and John said they came to New England from Bristol, which is just across the River Avon from Bedminster.[12]
  • Zebulon Hill's date of birth is estimated as about 1621,[13] which is an excellent match for the baptismal date of Zabulon, the son of this profile's Philip Hill.
  • The name Zebulon/Zabulon was quite rare. A search on familysearch.org in February 2020 for the birth or baptims of children by the name of Zebulon/Zabulon (or variants thereof) in England in 1610-1630 found no record for the baptism of a Zebulon/Zabulon Hill and only 7 records for the bapism of Zebulons/Zabulons of any surname.

Marriage(s)

The identity of Philip's wife or wives is unknown.

Children

Philip had the following children (and perhaps others):

  1. Joane, bur. December 1 sometime in 1599-1616 (perhaps in 1610) in Bedminster[2][3][4]
  2. (probably) Jone, bur. May 1, 1611 in Bedminster[5][4]
  3. Margery, bpt. October 18, 1616,[6][7][4] no further record
  4. Zabulon, bpt. March 21, 1619/20.[8][9][4] He was probably Zebulon Hill who immigrated to New England prior to 1645, m. November 16, 1651 Elizabeth Dike in Gloucester, Massachusetts, d. before March 8, 1699/1700 in Salem, Massachusetts. (See discussion and sources in Zebulon's profile.)
  5. (probably) Philip, b. probably sometime in 1620-1636, had children, including a son named Roger, d. before January 8, 1709 in Bedminster, Somerset. (See discussion and sources in Philip's profile.)
  6. (probably) Elinor, b. probably about 1630, m. November 16, 1647 James Babson in Gloucester, Massachusetts, d. March 14, 1714 in Gloucester, Massachusetts. (See discussion and sources in Elinor's profile.)
  7. (probably) John, b. probably about 1635, m. November 24, 1657 Abigail Woodbury in Salem, Massachusetts, d. February 8 or 9 in Beverly, Massachusetts. (Se discussion and sources in John's profile.)

Death

Based on the estimated date of birth of Philip's younger known probable child, Philip probably died sometime after 1635. Since the only known records for him are from Bedminster, England, it is reasonably likely that Philip died in Bedminster.

So, where does Dean Crawford Smith and Melinde Lutz's Philip^A Hill fit in: He is reported the father of Roger^1 Hill. See p. 333, InternetArchive (borrow).

Was Philip^A Hill left out, or was he dropped as a sibling to Zebulon Hill m. Elizabeth Dike, etc.

Edited to add: Found him; we just bifurcated the son Roger into Roger Hill (abt.1650-bef.1710) and Roger Hill (1650-).
