William was born in 1861[1] in Eastrington, Yorkshire, England,[2] where he lived with his parents, William Hill and Mary Leak.[3][4]
At the time of the 1881 census, William worked as a railway labourer and boarded with Martha Varley, a widow, in Selby, Yorkshire.[5]
In 1883 William married Martha Varley (née Eccles).[6] The family lived in Selby in 1891, when William was an assistant railway guard.[7] The family had moved to Hessle, Yorkshire, by 1901.[8]
Martha died in 1906 at the age of 59.[9] In 1911 William worked as a railway weighman and lived with his new wife, Gertrude Martha.[10]
