Peter Hill was born in about 1793 in Lancashire.
Peter married Ellen. He probably married Ellen Pinnington on 16 Sep 1810 at Rainford Chapel of Ease.[1] Peter was a husbandman; both were of the local parish (Prescot), and neither had been married before. The witnesses were Henry Frenster? and Mary Vose. There is no mention of their being under age, which they would have been if this is the right marriage and their age in other records is correct, or of parents' consent being given. So there is some doubt that this is the correct marriage, but no other candidate for their marriage has been found yet.
Their first child may have been John Hill, who was born on 25 Oct 1811, and christened on 17 Nov 1811 at St Helens Chapel of Ease. Only his father is named in the record and not his mother, and there was more than one Peter Hill having children in the area at the time; scrutiny of their occupation and addresses might help resolve this.[2]
Their son Henry Hill was christened on 27 Aug 1815 at St Helens Chapel of Ease.[3]
Their daughter Elizabeth Hill was born in about 1817 in Windle, Lancashire. She was christened on 14 Sep 1817 at St Helens Chapel of Ease. Her family's address was given as Hardshaigh, and her father's occupation as labourer.
Their daughter Alice Hill was christened on 16 Jul 1820 at St Helens Chapel of Ease.[4] She presumably died in infancy.
Their daughter Alice Hill was christened on 2 Jun 1822 at St Helens Chapel of Ease.[5] She presumably died in infancy.
Their daughter Alice Hill was christened on 16 Nov 1823 at St Helens Chapel of Ease.[6]
Their son Thomas Hill was christened on 2 Oct 1826 at St Helens Chapel. He presumably died in infancy.[7]
Their son Thomas Hill was christened on 30 Mar 1828 at St Helens Chapel. The family's address was given as Eccleston, and his father's occupation as labourer.
Their son Henry died in 1828, aged 13; he was buried on 4 Jun 1828 in St Helens.[8]
Their son Henry Hill was christened on 19 Sep 1830 at St Helens Chapel. The family's address was given as Eccleston, and his father's occupation as labourer.
Their son James Hill was christened on 18 Nov 1832 at St Helens Chapel. The family's address was given as Eccleston, and his father's occupation as labourer.
Their daughter Elizabeth married Denis Norton or Naughton in 1841, in a registrar-attended ceremony in Prescot district. The marriage took place in the first quarter of the year.
By June 6th 1841, the family were living in Poldings Court, Eccleston. Denis and Elizabeth were living with Peter and Ellen. The young couple's surname in the census is written "Nocter" - perhaps miscopied from the original census return. Peter was working as a labourer, as was Dennis. Elizabeth's birthplace was mistakenly recorded as Ireland.
Peter died in 1847, aged 54. He was buried on 5 Mar 1847 at St Helens Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. His address was given as St Helens.
