Biography

Sarah's birth was recorded on February 9, 1802 at Foster RI, along with her siblings' births. She was named in the 1778 will of her grandfather, Thomas Hill ['Rhode Island Genealogical Register', 2:15].

Sarah's younger sister, Anna, married Col. Israel Phillips in 1805. Israel Phillips served as a guardian to the minor children of Sarah after Sarah's husband, George Tyler, died. Anna (Hill) Phillips died on February 7, 1825. [Foster RI VR 1:35, 1:46; 'Rhode Island Genealogical Register 19:46]

Hellen May Jencks, the granddaughter of Israel and Anna (Hill) Phillips, married Albert Tyler (1845-1933). Albert was a great-grandson of James and Mary (Place) Tyler. Israel Phillips is mentioned in 'Some of the Descendants of Asaph Phillips and Esther Whipple of Foster RI' (by Kenneth W Faig Jr, Moshassuck Press, Glenview IL, 1993, page 22) as a colonel in the Rhode Island militia in 1825.

Benjamin Wright was Sarah's second husband as indicated by the land transactions below. No marriage record has been located, but she married between 1830 and 1836. Sarah Wright testified that she was age 63 and that Hannah was the widow of Benjamin Hill. (David Library, Washington Crossing PA, National Archive film 27, reel 1274, W23280)

Foster Rhode Island recorded land transactions: Sarah Tyler purchased from Welcome & Rhoby Rood. Volume 6, page 234, March 23, 1822. [Note: transfer of lot 2. See daughter Rhoby's messages.] Sarah Tyler purchased from William W Wright and Delight. Volume 9, page 113, March 30, 1833. Sarah Tyler paid $100 to William W Wright butted and bounded by land formerly owned by Joshua Harrington, land of Richard Waterman, and the highway. It is lot 7 on the original plat of the division of the estate of George Tyler Foster RI Deeds Volume 9, page 114: Sarah Tyler sold to Stephen Brayton for $100 5 1/2 acres, that was lot 2 in the division of estate of George Tyler, on March 30, 1833. Sara L & Benjamin Wright sold to Albin Wright. Volume 11, page 357, December 3, 1850. Sarah and Benjamin Wright sold 4 1/2 acres for $50 to Albin Wright. This was lot 7 in the division of the estate of George Tyler. Bounded by the lot formerly owned by Joshua Harrington, land formerly owned by Richard Waterman, and the highway. [Note: Albin was the son of Sarah's second husband, Benjamin Wright.]

1850 US Census (reel 432-841) Warwick, Kent County RI, conducted August 27, 1850, page 129 (258): dwelling 320, family 370, Sarah Wright wd, age 75, female. Hannah Henrys, age 37, female, weaver. Nancy -, age 30, female, weaver. Horace -, age 24, male. Stephen -, age 19, spinner. Sarah -, age 17, female. Asa B -, age 12, male. Sarah B Eldredge, age 19, female. Samuel A -, age 51, male, stonecutter. Charles R -, age 17, male. Martha -, age 15, female. Amanda M -, age 10, female. Samuel A -, age 8, male. Ruhanun [?] -, age 4, male. Angeline R -, age 5, female. All born RI. (The Henry family are the grandchildren of Sarah by her deceased daughter Mary (Tyler) Henry)
