Biography

Sarah Hill was born in 1806 in the Parish of St Andrew in Plymouth, Devon, England. She was the daughter of William Hill and Elizabeth Dyer and one of nine children - 2 sons and 7 daughters.

At 12 years old, her mother and two sisters pass away. Her grandfather and two grandmothers within the next five years.

An older sister, Emma Jane Hill (1802-24 Oct 1866) was unmarried and lived at Liskeard, Cornwall, England.
Another sister, Ann Mountjoy Hill (1808-1887) married Francis William Paddon and had a son and a daughter. They lived at 10 Horbury Crescent, Notting Hill, London.
A third sister, Eliza Dyer Hill, (1810-1887) married George Cole and also had a son and a daughter.
A brother, William Hill, (b. 1799) married Elizabeth (or Mary Ann) Rudmore and had two sons, both born in France where the family lived for many years.
The Hills educated their daughters. Emma Hill taught at a school for girls in Liskeard, Cornwall, and her sister Elizabeth was a governess before her marriage.

Edwin married Sarah Hill on 4 Nov 1833 in Devon, Plymouth, England and they had 8 children - 1 son and 7 daughters [1].

In 1841, she travelled on the ship William Bryan to New Plymouth, New Zealand. She was pregnant with her fourth child. Arrived in New Zealand with Corbyn (5), Katie (18 months) and Emily (3).

At the start of the Maori War in 1860 she travelled to Nelson with her children Kate, Frances, Mary, Augusta and Ellen. Emily stayed behind in New Plymouth.

She passed away in 1879 aged 73 years in Nelson, New Zealand [2].
