Biography

Joseph Lane was born 28 March 1775 in Wake County, North Carolina. He is the son of Jesse Lane and Winifred Aycock.

He married 24 Mar 1807 in Clarke County, Georgia to Elizabeth Hill, daughter of Isaac Hill and Nancy Crane. Based on the census, Elizabeth was born 1790-1795.

Joseph and Elizabeth had at least 7 children, per his will, and 2 more that were not named specifically in his will.

Nancy, Lorena and Eudocia were named the eldest children. Nancy Ann "Nannie" Lane [1808-1840] was married to Judge/Congressman/Senator Walter Terry Colquitt in 1823. W T Colquitt was listed as an executor in her father's will.

Lorena A Lane [1810-1897] married Dr Bennett A Ware.

Eudocia Lane [1812-1868] married 1) Dr Hampton Wooten Hill and 2) Joseph Winship.

Albert [b 1820], Joseph [1814-1880] and Isaac [ b 1826] were named the youngest children. And there was a child yet unborn that Elizabeth was carrying. This child was a girl and alive in the 1830 census. In the 1850 census, Elizabeth b c 1828 is living with her mother Elizabeth Lane age 55 GA, brothers Albert M 30 and Isaac H 24 in La Grange, Troup County, Georgia.

Other children that were not named in the will were the ones born in the middle of the eldest and youngest; Alfred B 1816-1865; Augustus M 1817-1827;

Joseph left a will dated 24 Jan 1827 in Newton County, Georgia. In it, he named his beloved wife Elizabeth; his 3 youngest children viz Albert, Joseph and Isaac; his 3 eldest children viz Nancy [named as married], Lorena and Eudocia. He named his executors as Walter T Colquitt, brother Jesse Lane, nephew Richard S Lane. Witnesses were George Smith, Uriah Sparks and George B Whipple. Proven 14 Jan 1828, Newton County, Georgia.

NOTE: This will is interesting in that LANE is handwritten under Joseph's signature. The flourish on the capital "L" of Lane makes it look like a "V".

In 1830 Newton County, GA census, Joseph's widow Elizabeth is aged 40-49 with four young children in the household and 18 slaves.

In the 1850 La Grange, Troup County, Georgia census Elizabeth is 55 years old, born in GA and owns $2,000 worth of property. Her three children are living with her, Albert 30, Isaac 24 and Elizabeth 22.

In the 1850 slave schedule; Elizabeth Lane has 2 slaves, Albert M Lane 5 slaves, Isaac H Lane 6 slaves and Elizabeth Lane 6 slaves, total 19.

Elizabeth Hill Lane died in 1851 and is buried in the Hillview Cemetery in La Grange, Troup County, Georgia. There is not a headstone, but there is a footstone that reads LANE. Many of her children are buried there as well including daughters Lorena, Eudocia and Elizabeth.
