Biography

Robert Oakshott Hill was born in 1867 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England to Samuel Hill and Lucy (Henwood) Hill. His birth was registered in Portsea Island, Hampshire in the second quarter of the year (with mother's maiden name "Henwood").[1]

Robert's father Samuel Hill passed away in 1868, and his mother Lucy Hill passed away in 1869. Robert and his sisters were raised by their aunt Mary (Henwood) Oliver and uncle Stephen Oliver.

In 1871 Robert Hill (age 3) lived in Portsea with his uncle Stephen Oliver (45, Rigger), aunt Mary Oliver (43, Dress Maker), and two sisters: Annie Hill (9) and Grace Hill (2).[2]

In 1881 Robert Hill (age 13) lived at Prince George Street in Portsea with his uncle Steven Oliver (55, Greenwich Pensioner), aunt Mary Oliver (53), and sister Grace Hill (12).[3]

In 1891 Robert Hill (age 23, Writer) lived at Newcome Road in Portsea with his brother-in-law Leonard Etherington (34, Carpenter), sister Grace Etherington (age 22), two nephews: Burton Etherington (2) and Oliver Etherington (1), as well as his widowed aunt Mary Oliver (63).[4]

Robert Oakshott Hill married Emma Lucy Bull in 1891. The marriage was registered in Portsea Island in the second quarter of the year.[5]

Robert and Emma had three daughters: Florence Lucy Hill (1891-1980), Marion Maud (Hill) Jones (1898-1974), and Vera Victoria (Hill) Cozens (1904-1976).

In 1901 Robert O Hill (age 33, Chief Writer R Navy) lived at Orchard Road in Portsmouth with his wife Emma L (31) and two daughters: Florence L (9) and Marion M (3).[6]

In 1911 Robert Oakshott Hill (age 43, Naval Pensioner - Writer Civilian) lived in Portsmouth with his wife Emma Lucy (41) and three daughters: Florence Lucy (19, Tailoress Coat and Vests), Marion Maude (13, School), and Vera Victoria (6, School), as well as his sister-in-law Alice Avenell (35, Tailoress Machinist).[7]

Robert passed away on 23 Nov 1943: "HILL Robert Oakshott of 120 Essex-road Milton Portsmouth died 23 November 1943 Probate Llandudno 10 February to Emma Lucy Hill widow. Effects £1934 5s 9d."[8] His death was registered in Portsmouth in the last quarter of the year.[9]
