John was born about 1802 in Pennsylvania, the only known child of Samuel Hill. On 19 August 1833 in Monongalia County, when he was in his very early thirties, he married 20-year-old Nancy Dallas Prickett, the third of eleven children and the second of six daughters of Job and Mary Ann Price Prickett. She bore him nine known children: five sons, four daughters.
