James Hill was born on 29 Mar 1846 in Bishops Waltham, Hampshire, England to James Hill and Amy (Watkins) Hill. His birth was registered in the Apr-Jun quarter of the year in Droxford, Hampshire.[1]

James was christened in Bishops Waltham on 17 May 1846.[2]

At the time of the 1851 Census, James Hill is 6 years old and the youngest in the family (a scholar). He is living on White Hart Road in Bishops Waltham, with his family – father, James age 40, a widower (builder employing 2 men), 2 sisters, Sarah Ann (11, scholar), Mary (8, scholar) and a brother Robert (10, scholar).[3]

In the 1861 Census James Hill (age 15) is found in the household of Mary Cook, a nurse and widow, living at 20 White Hart Rd. There is nothing listed for his occupation.[4]

James Hill and Ann Pomfrett were married 29 Jun 1867, in Hammersmith, London.[5] The marriage was registered in Kensington, London in the second quarter of the year.[6]

James and Ann had two children: James Hill Jr (1870-1926) and Amy (Hill) Fenn (1876-1950).

In 1871 James Hill (age 25, Bricklayer) lived in Battersea, London with his wife Ann (23) and son James (0).[7]

Emigration James and his family emigrated to Ohio, USA in 1871.

In 1880 James Hill (age 35, Brick Layer) lived in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio with his wife Anne (32, Keeping House), son James (10, At School), and daughter Mamie (4).[8]

In 1891 James Hill (age 47, Builder) and his daughter Amy (14, Scholar) were visitors in the household of Samuel Crisp (bricklayer, builder and coffee house keeper) at 200 Upton Lane in Forest Gate, West Ham, Essex, England.[9] Samuel's household included his wife Sarah and seven children, as well as one servant.

In 1900 James Hill (age 54, Mason Contractor) lived at Ellen Street in Cleveland City Ward 32 with his wife Ann (52), son James Jr. (30, Mason Contractor), daughter-in-law Minerva (30), daughter Amy (24), and boarder Valentine Fenn (27, R R Clerk).[10]

In 1910 James Hill (age 63, Mason Contractor) lived at Ellen Avenue in Cleveland Ward 3 with his wife Ann (61), son James Jr (39, Mason Contractor), son-in-law Valentine H A Fenn (36, Freight Office), daughter Amy Fenn (33), and five Fenn grandchildren: Alice M (7), Walter H (4), Albert E (3), Anne P (0) and Amy L (0), as well as lodger Evelyn P Hodge (16, Apprentice Dressmaker).[11]

James Hill passed away on 12 Nov 1917 in Cleveland.[12]
