Biography

Cross of St George
Robert Hill was born in England.
Robert HILLS was christened on 2 December 1750 in Alverstoke, Hampshire, England.[1] He married Sarah Strugnell on 1 Oct 1783 in Alverstoke.[2] Their eldest child Robert was born in 1784 in Alverstoke, followed by a daughter Leah in 1787 (also in Alverstoke).[3] Robert probably died in either 1806 or 1809 and was buried in Alverstoke (see notes). Sarah probably died in 1821 (see notes).

Research Notes

The two children listed above are certainly the children of Robert and Sarah. However there are a number of christenings of children of Robert & Mary Hills in Alverstoke (William Batchell 1756, Robert 1758, John 1760, Mary 1763, Sarah 1766, James 1769, Charls 1771, Ann 1776). This looks like one family, and since Robert was born in 1750 he wasn't old enough to be the father of most of them, so probably the marriage to Sarah was his first marriage although he was about 33 when he married her. Mary wife of Robert was buried in 1805 in Alverstoke.[4]
It is unusual that they only had two children; it's possible they changed parish after Leah or became nonconformists. Alverstoke was a suburb of Gosport and there may have been more employment opportunities in Gosport itself or Portsmouth just across the water, which could have caused them to move. However, there are two burial records of Robert Hills in Alverstoke, which could plausibly be the Robert who married Mary and the Robert who married Sarah. Given that there was also a Robert (wife Elizabeth) having children even earlier in Alverstoke, and that Robert Hills could have moved in and out of the parish, it's impossible to be sure, but the simplest explanation would be that these two burials represent Robert who married Mary and Robert who married Sarah.
In addition to the christenings of children of Robert and Sarah and of Robert and Mary, the Alverstoke records list a number of burial records which may be relevant.
1) Rachel Hills, daughter of Robert, was buried there in 1787[5]; there is no christening for her in Alverstoke, but St Mary's, Portsea has one for a Rachel Hills (no father listed) in 1786.[6]
2) A Robert Hills, son of William, was buried there in Oct 1793.[7] Although this description matches the subject of this profile, usually the parents were only listed for the burial of a child, so it's unlikely to be our Robert. In fact the Robert of this burial record appears to have been born in 1793 (christened in May).[8]
3) Robert Hills buried 12 Jan 1806, Alverstoke - could be our subject.[9]
4) Robert Hills buried 04 May 1809, Alverstoke - could be our subject.[10]
5) Sarah Hills buried 18 May 1821, Alverstoke - could be our subject's wife.[11]
