Grace Jemima Hill was born in 1869 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England to Samuel Hill and Lucy (Henwood) Hill. Her birth was registered in Portsea Island, Hampshire in the second quarter of the year (with mother's maiden name "Henwood").[1]
Grace's father Samuel Hill passed away a few months before her birth, and her mother Lucy Hill passed away shortly afterwards. Grace and her siblings were raised by their aunt Mary (Henwood) Oliver and uncle Stephen Oliver.
In 1871 Grace Hill (age 2) lived in Portsea with her uncle Stephen Oliver (45, Rigger), aunt Mary Oliver (43, Dress Maker), and two older siblings: Annie Hill (9) and Robert Hill (3).[2]
In 1881 Grace Hill (age 12) lived at Prince George Street in Portsea with her uncle Steven Oliver (55, Greenwich Pensioner), aunt Mary Oliver (53), and brother Robert Hill (13).[3]
Grace Hill married Leonard Etherington in 1887. The marriage was registered in Portsea Island in the last quarter of the year.[4]
In 1891 Grace Etherington (age 22) lived at Newcome Road in Portsea with her husband Leonard (34, Carpenter) and two sons: Burton (2) and Oliver (1), as well as her brother Robert Hill (23, Writer) and widowed aunt Mary Oliver (63).[5]
In 1901 Grace Ethrington (age 32) lived at Newcome Road in Portsmouth with her husband Leonard (42, Carpenter (House)) and five children: Robert B (12), Oliver Geo (11), Claudia G (8), Leonard J (3), and Annie M (0), as well as her aunt Mary Oliver (73).[6]
In 1911 Grace Etherington (age 42) lived in Portsmouth with her husband Leonard (55, House Carpenter) and five children: Burton (22, Assistant Outfitter), Claudia (18, Dress Maker), John (13, School), Margarette (10, School), and Frances (8, School).[7]
Grace's husband passed away in 1932: "ETHERINGTON Leonard of 18 Newcome-road Portsmouth died 2 November 1932 Probate Winchester 18 November to Robert Oakshott Hill retired civil servant [Grace's brother]. Effects £293 3s 8d."[8]
Grace Etherington passed away on 13 Oct 1966, aged 97 years. "ETHERINGTON Grace of 90 First Avenue Farlington Portsmouth died 13 October 1966 Probate London 28 November to Robert Burton Etherington retired civil servant. £506."[9] Her death was registered in Portsmouth in the last quarter of the year.[10]
