John Rowland Hill was baptised on 8 October 1820 by mother Mary Lee Hill, (late Coles). No father was mentioned. [1]
John Rowland Hill and Mary Selwyn married in Huntley on 20 March 1849. Joseph lived in Cainscross, he was a pastry Cook, his father Joseph was a Brewer, Mary was a dressmaker living in Huntly, her father James was a Dealer. James Selwyn was a witness. [2]
In 1871 John R and Mary were living in Birmingham with 7 children. John was a confectioner. [3]
Research Note
John Rowland Hill was born before his parents marriage. His mother was noted to be Mary Hill late Coles. This would suggest her maiden name was Coles and then she married someone with the surname Hill. It would also explain his parents marriage, Joseph Hill married Mary Hill.
John gives his father as Joseph on his marriage certificate. As Mary and Joseph married when he was a young boy, whether Joseph was his father or step father remains unclear.
However, baptism records for Mary or evidence for a first marriage have not been found.
