Mary Ann emigrated with her family from England to South Africa, arriving in June 1858, aboard the sailing ship "Lady of the Lake".
At the age of 18 she married John Henry Ritson on 20 December 1866 at her father's house in Durban, Natal, by Licence. John was a 24 year old Bachelor, occupation Engineer[3]. The witnesses were Stephen Hillary, Thomas Thorpe Ritson and Harriet Hillary.
Mary was buried at Stellawood Cemetery, KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa[5]
