Lorenzo was enumerated on the 1850 census in Lafayette, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. His occupation appears to be listed as Speculator. Several other people were living with him, and may have been business associates. They were mostly adult men from various places: J. Chapman (Kentucky), J. H. Drinkhouse (Pennsylvania), A M Hinsley (Maine), S R Osborn (New York), A M Allister (Ireland), James Black (New York), and P A Fetherster (Ireland).[5]
He married a second time to Emily Louise Williams on 12 May 1855 in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana.[6]
They had two children:
Lorenzo and Emma were enumerated on the 1860 census in Scott County, Mississippi, with their young daughter, Frances; and his two sons from his first marriage, Frank and Joseph, who were both store clerks. Eight other people lived there, mostly laborers. Lorenzo was a successful merchant, with real estate valued at $18,000. He also owned personal estate reportedly worth $10,000, which included seven slaves ranging in age from infancy to 55.[1][7]
Lorenzo died on 17 March 1864 in Vicksburg, Mississippi. His death was recorded in New Orleans.[8][9]
His succession was filed by about 20 Apr 1864 at the New Orleans Second District Court. No doubt complicated by the timing of the Civil War, it dragged on for many years under several different administrators, and appears to have finally closed out by about 1878.[3]
Slaves
The 1860 slave schedule shows he owned 7 slaves in Scott County, Mississippi:[7]
Male, black, b. about 1805 (age 55)
Female, black, b. about 1816 (age 44)
Female, black, b. about 1839 (age 21)
Male, black, b. about 1842 (age 18)
Female, black, b. about 1857 (age 3)
Female, black, b. about 1858 (age 2)
Male, black, b. about Mar 1860 (age 2/12)
Need to review his 1864 succession documents (about 360 online images) to see what they say about slaves, if anything. He died around the time of the emancipation, and his succession wasn't closed out for a number of years.
Research Notes
Early records? Try to find some evidence of him in Pennsylvania. A simple search on Ancestry and FamilySearch produced no results.
Possible early marriage? Marriage of Lorenzo D. Hillerman and Rachel Updegraff, 8 Oct 1836, Jefferson County, Ohio.[10] Is this the same Lorenzo? There are other Lorenzo Hillermans scattered around, so will need to be careful when reviewing the records, especially since he was known to travel a lot as a merchant.
Migration Info. It isn't known when he moved south from Pennsylvania, so additional research needs to be done to check on his early life before migrating to Louisiana/Mississippi. He apparently moved around some, as noted by his two sons being born in different states -- Missouri and Illinois. He seems to have traveled up and down the Mississippi a good bit, as most events are in locations along or near that river. New York is also mentioned in his succession papers.
Death, Vicksburg, Mississippi. Need to see if there is a death record for him in Vicksburg. See also the cited will/probate document from Scott County, Mississippi.[11]
Probate Records. Lorenzo's probate papers confirm his earlier marriage with children before he married Emma Williams. These papers (about 360 online images) should be reviewed more closely for additional clues about his family, and their economic circumstances. For example, one affidavit in his succession papers mentions he sickened and died while on a business trip in St. Louis. Death record notes he died in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Since we don't know where he was buried, it's possible he could be buried in St. Louis, or "up the river" where his first wife was buried, or Vicksburg, or ?? who knows. Other probate documents mention details about his business, land holdings, etc.
See Ancestry Profile: #232019705681 for Lorenzo Dow Hillerman. Unsourced, but gives exact date of birth in Gloucester County, New Jersey. Note that Gloucester County is just across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
