Biography

Ann Maidstone Hillman was born September 6, 1780 at St. Leonard parish, Stratham, London and baptized there on October 11, 1780. She was the middle child (and only daughter) of three children born to Tristram Hillman and Ann Lindopp. Her older brother was Edmund Tristram Hillman, her younger was George Sykes Hillman.

Her father was a descendant of John Hillman, one of the earliest settlers on Martha’s Vineyard. Tristram left there for England at the age of 18, where he entered a Naval Academy. He sided with the British during the Revolutionary War, serving as a privateer. During the period 1778-1779 he was Master of the H.M.S. Maidstone. In 1784, the family left England and sailed for St. John, New Brunswick, aboard the Sloop Nancy. From there, they trekked inland toward the Lower Woodstock area. Capt. Tristram Hillman drowned in the Saint John River in June 15, 1784, at the age of 35.

At the age of 15, Ann married William Grant. Please see Introduction to the Grant Family for more information.

Ann Maidstone Hillman Grant died 15 April 1860, at the age of 79. She was buried alongside her husband in the New Lenentine Cemetery, Middle Southampton, York, New Brunswick.[1] She left behind quite a legacy – 18 identified (possibly 5 more that died as infants) children and 135 grandchildren.
