Annie (Hills) Austin was born in Cambridgeshire, England.

On August 3, 1858,^[1][2] Annie Kate Hills was born in Ely, Cambridgeshire to Edward and Jane Hills (née Humphreys). She was the second of three daughters, between Jenny Gertrude and Bessie Jellis. Following the death of her mother in 1864, the family temporarily lived with Annie's paternal grandfather Thomas Hills^[3] and he later lived with them after Annie's father secured his own housing. At this time, Edward was working as a printer and bookseller, likely with his father.^[4]

In 1888, Annie boarded the Umbria destined for New York City,^[5] arriving in the United States on November 3. The following day, Annie was married to George Edward Austin in Hoboken, New Jersey^[6] and they welcomed their first child, a daughter named Hilda Mary in Manhattan on August 22, 1889.^[7] Following Hilda, Annie gave birth to Leslie Hills on August 7, 1891,^[8] Hazel May on August 29, 1892,^[9] and Gwendolyn Ethel on March 1, 1895.^[10] The family lived in Brooklyn where George worked in selling rubber goods^[11] and as a commission agent.^[12] He later became the President of an electrical specialist company, and so Annie was not required to work as the family hired a servant named Nora Meathe.^[13]

Annie lived to witness the marriages of her daughter Hazel to Frederich Godfrey Heller in September 1915,^[14] and Gwendolyn's marriage to John Roland Hogue in March 1916^[15] prior to her death in Brooklyn on December 13, 1919.^[2]
