Biography

Henry John Hills, always known as Harry, was born on 23, December 1899,[1] but his siblings remembered his birthday by saying 'Harry goes with the year'! He was the son of Harry Hills and Sue Hall. Harry was born at 50 Hermit Road, Canning Town, Greater London, England. He is recorded with his family in the 1901 census. [2]

Harry with his maternal Grandfather, John Edward Reeves,

and again in the 1911 census. [3] He was the oldest of the Hills boys. Before cars were common he had a car with a dickie seat which his younger brothers and sisters loved to sit in.

Harry had a wireless shop in Barking and recharged accumulators as well as mending the sets and repairing gramophones.[4] Later he had a cycle shop.

He married Susannah Du Reiu, known as Druie, in the June quarter of 1927,[5] but before long he had formed a relationship with Marjorie Barber who was a teacher at the local school. She taught Harry to read and write and her taught her to drive. A protracted divorce case took place in 1935.[6] Druie subsequently married James Mansfield and they lived in Epping.

Marjorie moved in with Harry and the presumption was that they had married but in fact they did not marry until the second quarter of 1945.[7] The divorce caused a rift in the family, Marjorie was never fully accepted by some, including Harry's father. Harry did not have any children from either marriage.

Harry was a freemason. He was on the local council at Barking and at one time he stood for parliament but he did not get elected. Harry died in Barking, Essex on August 23 1977.[8] He was buried in Barking Cemetery. Probate was issied at Ipswich on16th Jan. 1978.[9]
