He is the son of Asa Hillyer and Rhoda Smith.
Shaler Hillyer was born the 2nd August 1775 in Granby, Hartford, Connecticut.[1]
Shaler was chosen in 1803 by the town of Petersburg, Georgia to collect the taxes due the city of Petersburg. The following newspaper notice appeared regarding Shaler's authority to collect the taxes: "Pursuant to a resolve of the board of Commissioners for the town of Petersburg, Notice is hereby given, that I shall attend at the post-office on the fourth Monday in September next, for the purpose of receiving a return of all taxable property within the limits of said town. Those concerned will take notice accordingly. Shaler Hillyer G.R.C."[2]
Shaler was in a business partnership with Oliver Whyte in the ownership of a store in Petersburg, Georgia. The following notice appeared when the partnership was dissolved: "NOTICE The partnership of Oliver Whyte & Shaler Hillyer, having been desolved by mutual consent, it has become absolutely necessary that their books be closed: Those therefore who are indebted to the firm of Whyte & Hillyer or to Oliver Whyte are solicited to come forward & settle their accounts by making payment or giving their notes. The business of the store will be continued as usual by Shaler Hillyer."[3]
Georgia legislature in 1815 passed legislation: "To authorize Shaler Hillyer of the county of Wilkes, to build a mill dam across Broad river, at the shoals called and known by the name of Mucke's Ferry Shoals."[4]
Shaler is listed in the following notice as being a director of the Petersburg Mercantile Company: "Notice A meeting of the Stockholders of the Petersburg Mercantile Company, will take place in Petersburg, on the 20th day of June next at 11 o'clock A.M. of which all concerned will take notice. Thos. M. Barnett, Shaler Hillyer Directors." [5] NOTE: Petersburg was a town that was located in Wilkes county, Georgia and ceased to exist by the time of the Civil War. This part of Wilkes county is now in Elbert county, Georgia. Petersburg was located at the fork of the Broad River and Savannah River. [6]
