Mary Howard was born about 1832 in Hurst, Lancashire, England.

Mary Howard married Josiah Garside in 1850. The marriage was registered in Ashton Under Lyne in the third quarter of the year.[1]

Mary and Josiah had at least six children:

  1. Martha Garside (c1850-)
  2. James Garside (1854-)
  3. John Garside (1855-1874)
  4. Martha Ann Garside (1858-)
  5. Samuel Garside (1860-)
  6. Ellen Garside (1867-)

In 1851 Mary Garside (age 19, Power Loom Weaver) lived at Hillgate Street in Ashton Under Lyne with her husband Josiah (19, Coal Miner), daughter Martha (0), mother-in-law Betty (53), three siblings-in-law: Ann (22, Power Loom Weaver), William (16, Coal Miner), and Mary (9, Day & Sunday Scholar), and visitor Thomas Coddy (19, Power Loom Weaver).[2]

In 1861 Mary Garside (age 29, Cotton Weaver) lived in ?, Lancashire [possibly Dukinfield, Cheshire, which was in a Lancashire registration district] with her husband Josiah (29, Coal Miner) and four children: James (7, Scholar), John (5, Scholar), [Martha] Anne (3), and Samuel (0), as well as his brother William (27, Coal Miner).[3]

In 1871 Mary Garside (age 39) lived in ?, Lancashire [most likely Dukinfield] with her husband Josiah (39, Collier) and five children: James (17, Collier), John (15, Collier), Martha A (13, Cotton Weaver), Samuel (10), and Ellen (3).[4]

Mary's husband Josiah and son John were both killed in the Astley Deep Pit Colliery Explosion on 14 Apr 1874: "John Garside (18), Waggoner, of 164 Astley Street, Dukinfield. Son of Josiah below" & "Josiah 'Siah' Garside (42), Miner, of 164 Astley Street, Dukinfield. Father of John above, left a widow, Mary, and three children."[5]

In 1881 Mary Garside (age 49) lived at Astley Street in Dukinfield with her son James (26, Coal Miner), daughter-in-law Harriett (26, Cotton Weaver), and three grandsons: Josiah (6, Scholar), John (5, Scholar), and Ernest (4, Scholar).[6]
