Robert Hilton was born in late 1864/early 1865 ^[1] in Rochdale, Lancashire, England, the son of William Hilton and Harriet Beanland.

In 1871 he was with his parents and 3 siblings in Wardleworth, Rochdale, Lancashire.^[2]

He married Sarah Jane Hempey on 17 August 1889 at St James' church, Wardleworth, Lancashire.^[3]

In 1901 he was with his wife and 5 children in Chadderton, Lancashire. ^[4]

In 1911 a boot repairer, he was with his wife and 9 children living at 4 Slack Street, Ardwick, Manchester, Lancashire.^[5]
