Margaret was born on 1 July 1859 in Waterford, Erie, Pennsylvania, United States. She was the daughter of John Lattimore Himrod and Mary Elizabeth (Brown) Himrod.[1]

Margaret was one of the first class of five to be graduated from Waterford Academy, 22 June 1877 at the age of (18) and was the last survivor of that class. She taught school in Waterford and then in Kansas.

She was graduated from New York Hospital for Nurses 06 Oct 1883 (age 24). She was graduated from the Women's Medical College of New York City as a General Practitioner & Surgeon 28 May 1888 (age 29). For six years she was on the surgical staff of the Women's Hospital of Staten Island.
Traveling by stagecoach, because the railroad had not been built in the territory yet, she arrived at Spencer, Nebraska and opened up her first doctor's office and drugstore. If this was immediately after the six years on the staff at the Women's Hospital, it would have been 1894 and Margaret would be 35. She married William Henry Barney II when she was 36 years old, because it is said, she thought it was time she propagated and when she saw Mr. Barney was tall and handsome and healthy, he was chosen. This is transcribed from the Barney Book page 7.
Per writing on the photo - Grace Himrod lent her sister, Margaret Cordelia Himrod, money to go to medical school. Margaret Cordelia Himrod gave up her inheritance to go to medical school.
