Edward Robert Hinder was born in 1829 at Kolkata, West Bengal, India. He was a son of John Hinder and Elizabeth A unknown. He was educated in Ireland.
He migrated to Adelaide, South Australia, in the Hooghly in 1846. By 1849 he was living at Ebenezer, New South Wales.
On 11th February 1851 he married Sophia Ford in St John's Church of England, Wilberforce, New South Wales.[1]
He began his teaching career in 1852 at St James’ Church of England School at Pitt Town, subsequently teaching at Anglican schools in Kelso (from 1857), Wilberforce (1860) and Smithfield (1871). He was appointed principal of the Protestant Orphan School at Parramatta in 1873, remaining there until he retired early in 1885.
Edward had no formal art training but sketched as a hobby. His grandson, Frank Hinder AM, became a noted sculptor and artist.
He passed away of heart disease, aged in his mid-60's, on 15th June 1894 at Summer Hill, New South Wales.[2]
