Biography

Lionel Montague Hindle, son of James Edward Hindle and his wife, Martha Anderson, was born at Doncaster in Yorkshire in 1883 where the family was still living in 1891. [1] By 1901 his father had become a Bank Manager in Settle and Lionel was no longer living at home but has not been found in the 1901 Census.

In 1911 Monty, a surveyor, was visiting his brother, Frederick, at a boarding house in Leeds. [2] Lionel was a witness at the wedding of his sister, Lucy, to Arthur Cross in Bridlington on the 15th of April 1914 [3] [4] and on the 24th of February 1916 stood godfather to their first child, Wilfrid Henry, at Hapton in Norfolk. [5]

He was living at Walton-upon-Thames when he enlisted in the Prince of Wales Own Civil Service Rifles. [6]

HMT Aragon

After some time in France Lionel found himself, late in December 1917, in Marseilles where he and his comrades embarked aboard HMT Aragon bound for Alexandria in Egypt, accompanied by HMS Attack. 160 VADs had joined the more than 2000 troops aboard and reportedly they had a happy time celebrating Christmas at anchor off Malta. On the 30th of December they were some eight miles off Alexandria harbour when Aragon was struck by a torpedo and she very quickly developed a serious list to starboard. Attack at once came to the rescue and over the next quarter of an hour had managed to take around 400 survivors from the sea. Aragon sank within about 20 minutes of being hit. Then a torpedo struck Attack which was split in two and sunk in about 7 minutes. Around 610 souls were killed the survivors being rescued by trawlers. Lionel's remains were never found. [7] He is memorialised at the Chatby Memorial. [8] He left an estate valued at £258 13s 1d. [9]

Lionel is also memorialised at St Mary Oatlands in Surrey. [10]

Somebody called Madge Hindle was named on his Army Pension Ledger. [11]
