Biography

Mary (Hindley) Battersby was born in Lancashire, England.

Mary Hindley was born in Lancashire about 1738, the daughter of Robert Hindley and Anna Pendlebury. She was baptised on 26 Mar 1738 at Deane, Lancashire.^[1] She may also have been baptised the following day at Westhoughton, Lancashire.^[2]

On 8 November 1760, Richardson Battersby, son of William Battersby and Jane Rothwell, of Batten, Lancashire, entered a bond to marry Mary Hindley, daughter of Robert Hindley and Anna Pendlebury, then residing in Wigan, Chester.^[3]

Mary Hindley, daughter of Robert Hindley and Anna Pendlebury, married Richardson Battersby, son of William Battersby and Jane Rothwell, at Deane, Lancashire on 5 January 1760/61.^[4] They had two daughters: Ann, who married William Mckeand in 1782, and Beatrix.

Mary (Hindley) Battersby passed away in Lancashire in 1781. She was buried at Deane, Lancashire about 15 October 1781.^[5] She was survived by

• at least her brother Peter Hindley
• her husband Richardson Battersby, who later married the widow Betty Whalley
• her daughter Ann, who later married William Mckeand
• her daughter Beatrix who died in either 1821 or 1824.

Mary (Hindley) Battersby's children and her siblings were named as beneficiaries in the 1801 will of their cousin Peter Locker, which was proved on 5 April 1809.
