Richard was baptised on 30 August 1822 in Preston, Lancaster, son of James (bookkeeper) and Margaret Hindman of Chapel Street, Preston.

Richard was a machine maker and married Elizabeth Green, a weaver, in Penworthem, near Preston, on 1 May, 1842.

They lived in Preston and had 11 children. Richard passed away in 1866 at the age of 44.
