Biography

William Hinds Prescod (1775-1848) was the son of Francis Prescod.

He married Mary Brice, the Barbadian-born daughter of R.H. Brice of Bridgetown on the 29th of June 1812, in St Michael's Church Barbados, [1] but prior to this marriage between 1806 and 1812 he appears to have fathered four children with a free coloured woman, Lydia Smith of Barbados.

The eldest of these children was Samuel Jackman Prescod (1806-1871), who became the first non-white member of the House of Assembly in Barbados in 1843. (He was named after a Bajan planter, Samuel Jackman, the father of John Abel Jackman (1800-1830) [2] All his children from Lydia were buried as Prescod.

Slave owner

William Hinds Prescod was the largest slave-owner in Barbados, British West Indies in the 1830s as tenant for life or owner of plantations across Barbados and in St. Vincent.
