Gladys Lou (Hines) Wood, 74, of Caldwell, died May 20, 2011, of natural causes.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 27, at Dakan Funeral Chapel, Caldwell. Rick Tuha will officiate. Burial services will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Caldwell.

Gladys was born Feb. 18, 1937 in Valparaiso, Indiana, to Edgar and Rosemary Hines. Her father was a blue-collar steel mill worker and her mother was a devout member of the Seventh-Day Adventist church. Gladys was raised in humble surroundings and was the oldest of five children, which contributed to her sense of strength and determination she would possess throughout her life. As a young child she enjoyed going to church with her mother and listening to her play the piano.

As a young lady she met and married a service man from Parma, Idaho, Leonard E. Wood, who was stationed in the area. They tied the knot on Nov. 22, 1958, in Indiana. Together, Leonard and Gladys lived oversees in Verdun, France, and in various states, finally settling down in Caldwell, Idaho to raise their family. Gladys was employed with Simplot, Robinson Fruit Ranch, Sunring Foods, and worked for years as a loving caregiver. Her husband, Leonard, passed away in December of 2000.

Gladys appreciated the simple things in life, like taking long rides in the country, eating ice cream cones, walking, sitting in a park and people watching, putting together puzzles and completing word search games. She found great pleasure in watching her favorite TV show, the Golden Girls, and eating at her favorite restaurant, the Golden Palace.

Gladys knew no strangers, always wanting to strike up a conversation and enjoy other's company. But more than anything, Gladys loved her family. She always talked about her family and wanted to spend time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her family was the passion of her life and she continually showered an abundance of love on them.

One word sums up the special soul Gladys was, while she lived on this earth – she was a Giver – always giving to others. She will be dearly missed by all her family and friends.

Gladys is survived by five daughters, Debbie (Ron) Cadle, Vickie (Dennis) Fisher, Connie (Dale) Robnett, Roxanne (Tony) Zabel and Kathy (Rick) Tuha; her son, Robert (Marcella) Goin; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren (and one on the way). She is also survived by her siblings, Norman Hines, Myra Stanton, Peggy Barnes and Carol Wallace, who all reside in Valparaiso, Indiana.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Rosemary Hines and her husband, Leonard Eugene Wood.
