On 12 September 1918 Clyde registered for the draft during World War I. At the time he was a farmer working for his father.[6] Later that month the flu pandemic struck the Hines family and most of Clyde's family became sick.[4] Clyde became ill with appendicitis and went to the hospital Central Maine General Hospital in Lewiston for surgery. The surgery did not happen and he became ill with pneumonia and died there on 4 October 1918.[2][4][3][5] His funeral was held on 7 October 1918 from the family home and he was buried in the Adkins Hines Cemetery in Canton the same day.[2][7][8][9][10]
