Hingston Hall is named in memory of William Hales Hingston, S.J. (1877-1964), the oldest son of Sir William Hingston (1829-1907), distinguished surgeon, mayor of Montreal, and Senator. Father Hingston was educated at Collège Sainte-Marie. During his term as Rector (1918-25) he brought Loyola College into the modern era, gradually but radically changing the academic program, moving it away from the collège-classique tradition in which it had begun.

Hingston was one of the best known family names in English Catholic Montreal at the turn of the century. Sir William had been mayor of the city. Four of his sons were to serve in the First World War. One was Fr. William, a Jesuit chaplain in the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) who was to become Rector of Loyola College. The other three were Captain Donald (Loyola 1896) of the Medical Corps, Lieutenant Harold (Loyola 1898) who was wounded while serving the 60th Battalion and Lieutenant Basil.
