Robert was born in 1851, the son of Lorenzo Dow Hinkle and Millie Young. At the time Lorenzo was married to Mary Jane Sparks and Millie was single. Robert's mother married Abner James in 1856 and Robert is enumerated in the 1860 census as Abner's stepson.
"We find from 1880 afterwards that Robert never used the name Young. He also did not use the name Hinkle. He used the name of James. The reason, maybe he was an heir and was treated well by Abner and liked him. In many cases illegitimate or stepchildren will adopt the name of their beloved caregiver. In unhappy cases, however, the child will spurn the name of the foster or adoptive parent and in some cases even that of a male parent who abandoned the family. Robert's adoption of the name James has continued in his family to this day. Although the other James in Martin County were related to Abner and his descendants, Robert was a stepchild and was not related to the James family by blood."
Robert passed away in 1941.
