Biography

David Hinkley was born on 4 May 1821 in Pennsylvania. Family history says that he was apprenticed out to a cabinetmaker at age 12, going to live with him and his family until he was 21 and struck off on his own. In September, 1850, he was living with Susan Scott and her children John, May (listed as Mary), and Alexander in Winneconne, Wisconsin; the census records that he was 28, single, and working as a Merchants Clerk -- very possibly for John Scott. On 20 Feb 1851, David married Susan Scott's daughter Marjory "May" Scott in the Presbyterian Church in Neenah, Wisconsin, by the Rev. Samuel Robertson.

David and May had two sons, Alexander Christie Hinckley and Leonard Hinkley. Leonard died at age 2 1/2 of diphtheria... before his father changed the spelling of the family surname to Hinckley (this was done some time between 1870 and 1880, if the census records are accurate; family history says he added the "c" to distinguish his family from his nephew's, who also lived in Winneconne).

Census records list his occupation variously: 1850 Merchants Clerk 1860 Farmer 1870 Stave manufacturer 1880 Carpenter 1900 No occupation listed -- he was 79, a widower, and living with his sister-in-law Jean Scott and her daughter Helen Scott. 1905 Minnesota State Census: Retired. Age 85, living with his son Alexander C Hinckley and family in Claremont, Minnesota.

David died in Claremont, Minnesota, on 10 June 1908. He is buried in the Winneconne Village Cemetery (Section 04, Plot 09) with his wife May and their son Leonard. The Find A Grave memorial # is 61600048 and includes photos of his gravestone and the family plot with stones.
