Nathan and Mary moved to the Richard Sloan farm with Nathan's father Benjamin and his mother Sarah.

Nathan and Mary were consistent members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Mary had been a member of the Methodist Church since childhood.

Nathan and Mary were shown in the 1850 census, living next door to his widowed mother in Cass County, Missouri:

Nathan made two trips on the Santa Fe Trail, one in 1849 and one in 1853. Mary lived with her mother-in-law, Sarah, while Nathan was away. Nathan was paid $6.00 per month, plus an additional $1.50 if he did not drink or swear, and he saved enough money to buy land. In 1855 he homesteaded some land three and one-half miles east of Pleasant Hill, Missouri.

On Jan 15 1856 Nathan purchased 40 acres of land in Cass County, Missouri. He was described in this record as "Nathan Hinshaw of Cass County, Missouri". About this same time, father Benjamin and brother Thomas also purchased land in Cass County, Missouri.

Again on 01 Jun 1859, Nathan purchased 80 acres of land in Cass County, Missouri. He was again described in this record as "Nathan Hinshaw of Cass County, Missouri".

Working hard, Nathan managed to accumulate over 800 acres of land by the time of his death.

Nathan Hinshaw died Mar 30 1876, Cass County, Missouri; age 48y 9m 5d.

On the morning of March 30, 1876, Nathan left on horseback for the purpose of driving home some cattle which he had at the neighbor's. It was necessary to cross a creek about one mile south of his home and the creek was filled to over-flowing, due to the spring thaw. After driving the stock across, he attempted to cross on horseback but for some reason the horse fell backward, throwing Nathan under it in the water. Nathan sank in full view of three neighbors who were assisting, but none were able to save him. The neighbors immediately began searching for his body, but were unable to recover it until evening.

Nathan is buried in Sloan Cemetery in Baldwin Park, Missouri.[2]
