On the morning of March 30, 1876, Nathan left on horseback for the purpose of driving home some cattle which he had at the neighbor's. It was necessary to cross a creek about one mile south of his home and the creek was filled to over-flowing, due to the spring thaw. After driving the stock across, he attempted to cross on horseback but for some reason the horse fell backward, throwing Nathan under it in the water. Nathan sank in full view of three neighbors who were assisting, but none were able to save him. The neighbors immediately began searching for his body, but were unable to recover it until evening.
Nathan is buried in Sloan Cemetery in Baldwin Park, Missouri.[2]
