Mrs. W. M. Gates and Grandchild Killed in Wreck
Mrs. William M. Gates (Lottie Hinton Gates) 50, of the Rocky Branch community, this parish, met instant death about 11:30 a.m. last Friday, when she was struck by a truck near Bastrop. According to reports, the lady had alighted from a car in which she and her husband and their grandchild, Shirley Ann Hinton, were riding and had started across the road to a residence to get shelter from a rainstorm, when a truck from the opposite direction struck her. She was killed instantly.
The woman had a grandchild, Shirley Ann Hinton, aged 4, in her arms at the time. The child was severely injured and was taken to a Bastrop hospital, where it died Sunday. It was a daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Chester Hinton, of the Point community.
