Story

  • A partial letter from Iva Townzen
Johnny Hinton was one of the most interesting persons in our family. He was the son of Mary May Large, Hinton, King. She the daughter of Abraham, sister to Fred Large and my grandfather William B. "Joe' Large. My mother was out of contact with her father's family, the Larges, for most of her life. Joe and my grandmother Annie May Gibson were divorced when my mother was two years old. Anyway, Johnny would be the g-son of Martha Jane McDonald, Large. He lived with his grandparents a lot of the time due to the fact that his uncle Willis shot and killed his dad Jack Hinton when Johnny was very young. His name was Abraham John Hinton. He starting writing his life story and I have a copy but it is quite mixed up,needs lots of editing. Just another project that needs work.He was quite a story teller and he led a very interesting life. He died at MCAlester,Okla. when he was in his nineties. His mind was very sharp although he did lose his sight when he was in his late seventies. He was rounding up some cattle on a nephew's place and was knocked from his horse. He learned to type in braille and that was one reason his life history is mixed up. He repeated himself in many places and would forget where he stopped sometimes. This may be more info than you wanted, but I could talk all day about Johnny, because he was our first contact with my mother's family.and we were so fortunate to have found such a good historian.
