Biography

"Thomas Hiscock was born, probably in Nobleborough [Maine], on the Damariscotta River, Oct. 25, 1753. He removed to [Farmington] township in 1783[1] with his wife, whose maiden name was Anna Knowlton (a sister of Jonathan Knowlton, q.v.), and two children, and settled on front-lot No. 8, west side, now (1885) owned by Samuel G. Craig. Mr. Hiscock was a shoemaker, and, combining his trade with his farming operations, became a wealthy farmer. He was a selectman in 1802, and town treasurer in 1809. He was a charter trustee of Farmington Academy, but resigned the position after seven years. Mrs. Hiscock [Anna Knowlton] was b., probably in Ipswich, Mass, Aug. 21, 1759; d. April, 1846. Mr. Hiscock d. May, 1826."[2]

Birth

Although the birth date given in Butler is 25 October 1753,[2] and a Revolutionary War memorial headstone gives the same birth date,[3] the older headstone[3] reads "Died May 24, 1827 AE 74" which puts a birth date anywhere from 24 April 1752 to 24 May 1753, a full five months before the October birth date.

Marriage

Thomas's intention to marry Anna Knowlton (both then of Walpole, Lincoln, Maine) was published 29 July 1780[4] and they were married 19 August 1780 in Civil, Maine.[5]
The children born to Thomas and Anna Knowlton (as found on FamilySearch[6]) were:
Joseph K. Hiscock 1780–1857
Martha Hiscock 1782–1788
Hannah Hiscock 1785–1834
Martha Hiscock 1788–1843
Mary Hiscock 1789–1869
Anna Hiscock 1791–1865
Thomas Hiscock II 1795–1842
Samuel Hiscock 1797–1878
Sarah Jane (Sally) Hiscock 1801–1852

Death & Burial

Thomas died 24 May 1827, "AE 74," and is buried in the Knowlton Cemetery in Farmington, Maine.[3]

Residences & Community Involvement

It is believed that Thomas was born in the Nobleborough area of Lincoln County, Maine.[2][7]
In 1780 Thomas possibly made his first trip to what was then called Sandy River Plantation (now Farmington), ME[7] but did not settle there permanently until 1783[1] where his family settled on the west side of Sandy River, Lot No. 8 and apparently lived out the rest of his life there.[8] However, Thomas Parker gives the year 1787 as the famiy's arrival.[9]
In 1790 he was enumerated in Sandy River, First Township, Lincoln, Maine.[10] On 1 February 1794, Sandy River Plantation was officialy incorporated as Farmington.[11] In the first town meeting, Thomas, along with three others, was chosen as a "fence-viewer"[12] which could have included responsibilities for not only making sure the fence was in good shape, but they may also have been "empowered to administer oaths, examine witnesses, and award damages."[13]
In 1798 he appeared "In the returns of this district made Oct. 1, 1798, the following list appears of persons owning dwelling—houses on lots not exceeding two acres in any case, of a greater value than one hundred dollars... Thomas Hiscock."[14]
1800 Census.[15]
On 9 March 1802 Farmington residents gathered in an association to build a place of worship to become known as the Center Meeting-House, built in 1803. Thomas was part of that gathering and in an auction to help raise funds for the construction, he paid $55 for a pew: row No. 22 in the center of the church.[16] That same year he is listed as a town officer under the category of "Selectmen, Assessors, &c."[17]
In 1807, Farmington received a charter to build a school, to be known as Farmington Academy. Thomas was elected a charter member of the Board of Trusttes in 1807 and resigned in 1814.[18][19]
In 1809 Thomas was listed with the town officers as treasurer.[17]
1810 Census.[20]
1820 Census.[21]
