Upset about the poor conditions of the roads & fences in his town, he was very instrumental in obtaining legislation enacting to erect/create a separate town from the southern section of Amherst, NY. He suggested the name for the Town of "Ji ik do wah gah" (or "Juk do waa geh") which was intended to represent the name the Indians called this area, meaning "place of the crabapple tree" (Hawthorne) CHICTAWAUGA erected 22 March 1839.
